The First Date

The first date usually consists of lunch or dinner with a lot of conversation.  Most unmarried Latinas live at home and therefore should be collected and dropped off by their date to ensure parental approval.

Sexual Conduct

The majority of Latin American countries are Catholic and sex before marriage is still very much frowned upon.

Faux Pas to avoid

• Do not flaunt your wealth: street crime is rife in many Latin countries so try and not draw attention to yourself.  Do not carry all your cash/credit cards at once.
• Unconventional and individualistic behaviour is considered both rude and will also serve highlight that you are foreign.
• Try and speak some of the local language: this will help you to blend in and will make you less susceptible to being ripped off.  It will also help you communicate with your date.
• Do not fail to observe basic good manners: Hispanic society is more restrained, conservative, and traditional than Western countries.
• Do not sit on the floor in a crowded airport or bus station.
• Appearance is of paramount importance: dress smartly but not ostentatiously.
• Do not stand or walk with your hands in your pockets.
• In restaurants, wait to have your bill delivered to your table rather than paying at the till.
