Where to go

Moscow

The capital has more than its fair share of grey thoroughfares, but there is still evidence of pre-Stalinised Moscow hidden below the surface.

Attractions: include the Kremlin and Red Square.

St Petersburg

Dubbed the Venice of the North for its palace-lined waterways, the country?s most European city has escaped the architectural incursions of Stalinism and its grandiose relics of tsarist days are virtually intact.

Attractions: include the State Hermitage Museum, Peter & Paul Fortress and the Nevsky prospekt.

Novgorod

Novgorod lies at the heart of Russia's history as a pioneering artistic and political centre.

Attractions: its Kremlin includes the Byzantine Cathedral of St Sophia, the Millennium of Russia Monument, the icon-filled Chamber of Facets and the research-based Museum of History & Art.

Sochi

The Black Sea resort of Sochi has long attracted heads of state, foreign tourists and Russians alike.

Attractions: its subtropical climate, warm seas and adjoining trendy resort complex of Dagomys.
